Classic film... love it
ps (Anorak time) They also blew up a hanger at Duxford which they apparently didnt have permission to do.
They way I heard the story was, the plan was too do the normal film trick and fake the destruction of the WW1 type Hanger by placing small sized high explosive charge inside, however the special effects team place larger charges on the inside of the hanger on each of main buttress walls thinking that they would withstand the blast, however these were never designed to take an explosive shock wave from the inside and so the buttress walls kick out from the base of the building bring down most of the remaining structure with it.
This is quite common in war and action films, as most large explosions use real high explosive, plus fuel and coloured powers to create the desired effect. It's more the quaintly and type of explosive used in each charge that makes the difference between looking good for the camera and actually doing destructive damage. A similar miscalculation on amounts was made during the filming of the Half-track scene in "saving private Ryan", when Ryan fires the M1A1 Bazooka at the half-track and the front armour comes off, the panel blew 200 Ft into the air and out of shot on the first take and nearly killed half the grew at the same time.
Coooool, unnescessary destuction....I like it
