just got back from attempting to start the bug, got new battery all lights work but not turning over. engine all free just starter motor not kicking in, tried to find it to take off and clean up but couldnt find the bloody thing lol. im 95% sure it is the starter, is there any other thing it could be? once i find it i will check to make sure it has power going to it etc! did notice the live of battery to regulator was corroded a bit could this be a problem? got haynes manual on way but wondered if anyone could hlp!!! impatient!!! thx mark.

I would say the live wire, would help if in tip top condition dude, is it direct from you battery live to the regulator ? Be careful with that wire dude if it's connected to your live whilst possibly moving, checking it, i did that once and dropped it believe me, it will have a bloomin good go at welding itself to any slight touch of earth.............. and if your engine honks of fuel........whooo!!! Anyway...... Apply a small thin coat of vaseline onto your Battery terminals Just helps for better connection. I think i have a spare regulator lying round should you need one (if bug/bus the same?)

chances are its the solenoid (the switch that piggy backs on the starter and actually turns it on for you.... If you want, i'll pop over and give you mine and fit it for £50. I take it yours is a 12V bug? IE what age is it? Take care fella! Steve

forgot to say even if it is just the solenoid (Most likely) you cant change it on its own, they're one unit. secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/results.aspthats new starters.... Mine is a genuine Bosch one....

Remove drivers side (offside) rear road wheel. with car still jacked up, remove heater tube from heat exchanger to heater channel (if fitted) look up and back, there is the starter, the little bit on the top (same shape as the starter itself but smaller, is the solenoid, this is the thing you have issue with. Make it's aquaintance by smacking it with a hammer or other object, this will free the internal bits and it will then work... s ps then put it all back together....
