Hi everyone, some of you may remember me from one of your meets way back in October, i think? (was driving a blue fastback) Sorry i have not made it to anymore meets but issues with the car and working shifts has got in the way a bit. Bumped into Karl at work the other week and had a bit of a chat about the club and all things vw . and also reminded me about the site, so thought id sign up and say hi. Im working day shift this week so will try and pop by the meet on my home. Would love to bring the fasty over but having spent the day trying to cure a slight misfire, i now have a fasty that struggles to do 40 . If i get chance will have a tinker tomorrow after work. If not will just have to come in my chav car! ;D Anyway, its geting late and got work tomorrow, so will say bye for now and look forward to seeing you all and your dubs on Tuesday. Ben x

No worries about the meet dude Just great to see so many peoples and dubs attending. Been on holiday so not done much with car. Managed to spare an hour or so today with it, spent a while determining whether the TDC mark is correct on the pulley as iv read that if they've been swapped from other cars they might be different. Mine appears to be 10 - 15 degrees out! Set timing to my new marks and re-adjusted/balanced the carbs. Started on second attempt and got to idle ok. Took for a spin and still no power and now idle really lumpy too. Had to leave it at that for today, but got whole day tomorow(if it dont rain )to have another look. Really want it workin for the Jam Will keep ya posted

Thanks for the kind words dudes, Unfortuantly due to work and other commitments have only just had another proper go with tha car. Dont want ta bore ya with details but eventually have got it to idle again and found that cylinders 3 & 4 were not firing Didnt think it would even start on two Anyway, changed all four plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. Now just cylinder 3 not firing. have tried swapping ht leads around but makes no difference. but car seems to run fine now! Any ideas peeps Valves are adjusted fine and am just gonna do a compression test now. Thanks for any help in advance, beer tickets at the ready

yeah run copression test, it'll start on two! I ran my 1600 on 2 once when i popped the HT leads on the wrong way round! take the lead off the plug, stick an old plug in and hold it near earth, keep ignition on and slowly turn the engine, does the plug spark at all? once every two full turns of the crankshaft (but you already know that) if it does then the issue isn't electrical or possibly there is no issue! If you think its not firing but the plug is sparking swap them over so the one you know works is in the car. dunno if thats any use, just need to make mine run better now! hehe take it easy! Steve

Have tried everything you suggested steve, thanks. I now dont think the problems can be down to the electrical system. From cold it doesnt always idle with out a bit of gas but think this is down to chokes, but once warm drives as well as it ever has now, so maybe there is no real problem! The reason i think its only running on three is when you pull the cable to cyl3 there is no noticeable drop in revs, Surely this is not right? Have put a new spark plug in that is definately working and will try and use the car a bit this week. Then i can remove the spark plug and see if it shows anything. Wont be a next meet as am on nights but the next one I should be, with fastback. Will try and post some pics later for anyone who fancys a look.
