Hi guys with technical heads, well today i did a compression test. here are the results... From cyl1-4 (110psi) (90psi) (85psi) (120psi) obviously thats some serious differences! I've pulled the camshaft cover off and the plastic insert that goes over the camshaft has been distorted by the heat. Is it likely that a warped, head could cause this much discrepancy with regards to the compression? or is there likely to be a bottom end issue? thanks Steve

Hi Mate, according to vw heriatge the compresions should be around 120 psi, i dought it would be bottom end related more likely rings, head gaskets or as you rightly thought warped heads, have you checked the valves clearances, as tight clearances would cause low readings. Not sure about the plastic plugs though, not sure what they do without looking.

its not a plug, its a long plastic cover which sits between the top of the cam and the rocker cover. i think it just shows how much heat has been there.
is it worth taking the head off and getting it checked then wacking it back on and then doing another comp test.
John will your garage check the head to see if its warped and run a pressure test etc?
cheers steve

sorry mate i forgot you have a golf, in that case the compresions should be about 180 ish, and the plastic bit is a splash sheild for the oil to be redirected to the cam basically, are the valve clearances adjustable i guess they are, and most cases of low compresion i always check them first. It is still possible it be rings etc, the best way to check for ring probs it poor a little engine down the plug hole and do another compresion check on that cylinder, if it improves its rings if it does,nt it could be bad valves or clearances, i don,t think it will be head related

gasket blowing between 2 and 3? judging on the low comp on those too. the 120 is ok, towards the lower end of acceptable, but not bad! s

I've got the head off, is there any way you could get it checked at your garage. i want to get the head checked for warping and cracking.
MAte i will take up your offer! I have already used your wisdom. I've got the head off so I'll have a gander, take the other bits off manifolds and let you know! See you soon bro. Steve

what kind of price am i looking at? it's just whether its worth my while getting hold of a known-to-be-good second hand head, or whether its better to pressure check and skim mine! S

Do as Nige suggested give them a ring, I have in the past purchased recon heads from cylinder head services at reasonable price when the head i have supplied has had a problem.
