Right then first thing is to check that linkage for the gear stick (I'm assuming the stick is connected via a linkage to the gearbox, remember I'm a Golf man O.K. ) to see if the mechanism has gone out of adjustment, this is a common fault on some cars such as Golfs. If that not the problem then you'll have too look towards a fault, or failure with in the gearbox itself. Out of interest, has the reverse on a beetle got any form of gate on the stick to stop you trying to engage reverse by accident, I.E. pull up the gear lever, or push it down etc Also try the selector plate (if the beetle has one, Steve will know ) as these wear, and again the base of the gear lever if the above applies

yeah you have to push the gear stick down before you can engage reverse gear.

Right then if i was you start there, and work your way back to the gearbox, you could be very lucky and find its something to do with the gate mechanism, such as needs realigning which as i said happens quite often on Golfs, the parts wear on the linkage with use and thus need readjusting

Steve dude, I am sure that you did not mean to go out of your way yesterday, in such awful weather conditions, and obviously it must have been an accident to respond to a text message asking for help, Next time you should be more careful as to who you try your upmost to help, No complaint's here Please no light hearted banter in the technical section.
