Beetle: Lowering rear end

Hi

I want to lower the back end of my bug down and not exactly sure what to do

Ive got a rough idea and believe its not that complicated although a tadge confused about the advice I was given about 'chain the backend up' - can someone who has done it before give me some pointers?

For info - Ive got no engine in the bug at the moment - does this matter?

i just removed the swing plate after marking the plate and the end of the drive shaft( i spotted it with a sharp drill bit) and then pulled it off and turned it one spline, i tried two splines, but apart from looking the nuts with some serious camber it was two much so i settled for one. it looked a little like this.....................

Ive still got a bit (!) to do yet before Im ready to do it - but advice and offer of help much appreciated

Starting on the welding this weekend - never done it before but a friend is teaching me (well hes doing it while I melt scrap bits to practice) so really looking forward to it.
