Help!
Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a strange noise that our van started making yesterday?
Basically, we have a 1972 bay (1700 engine) which has started making a grindy/whiny noise when pulling away from stand still. Does it in both 1st gear and reverse. Also, if you go round a corner fairly slowly in 2nd, can also make the same noise then.
The noise stops once we are moving and gaining speed (2nd gear upwards). The noise sounds like it's coming from the rear of the bus.
Anyone got any thoughts?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Does it do it if you go down a hill with the clutch dipped and in neutral?

No - don't think so - it's only when gear is engaged. Can roll back and forth in neutral quite happily...although, we did jack the van up earlier, and tried to spin the wheels at the back - they would turn, but didn't spin freely. Anyway - Lefthooker is going to take a look for us a bit later, so he'll be able to diagnose the problem for us.

Just been to see Chris, and he has diagnosed a problem with the clutch release bearing and clutch plate....so we'll have a new clutch kit fitted next week. Thanks Chris for taking a look for us. In the meantime - we will carefully attempt to limp the van to Big Bang and back again.

why would it be release bearing if the clutch is not depressed? it shouldn't be in contact with anything. maybe i just dont know enough, I just cant see why it would be that! just my two-pen-uth! s

To be fair, I probably haven't described the problem well enough, and now that Chris has actually driven our van, heard the noise for himself, had a look, got a second opinion from another guy at his work, I'm sure he could explain it much better than me! (I'm only a girl after all!) ;D Thanks for you concern though.
