Its got a full mot and is fairly smart. But the thrust bearing is on its way out. How easy is it to replace one? And is there anyone on here that would help me do it, please.

as in clutch thrust bearing? I'll help dude, but you'll need an engine hoist, its gotta come out to sort the clutch... Golf doctor may well be a useful addition to the team, also (and most important) get a haynes manual!

Dont need to take the engine out , you will need to stap the engine inplace tho, once you take the box out it will want to drop. Plenty of lube and slow and steady on the cv bolts

yep Steve is right, its an engine out job , theres just not enough clearance on the cross member to do this job easily. Now if the Mk3 box is like the Mk2 unit the thrust bearing is built into the release fork mechanism, and is not a separate unit on the back of the pressure plate. So you'll have to split the bell housing and gearbox, and then split the back of the gearbox to get to the thrust bearing assembly We (the club) have a crane, plus as Steve stated the group has already done a Mk2 gti engine out/ back in once before. I've also got all the special tools for the spline drive bolts of the drive shafts and the setup plate for the gears shift (which may fit your Mk3 box, depending on the year of your car) YES again as STEVE has advised YOU get a Haynes, then I'll go through the book with you and checkout that what I've just said regarding the thrust bearing applies to your car.

Right lets start from beginning. Just been out to the car and when the car is in neutral with engine ticking over there is a background grinding noise. when i put it in gear and start driving the grinding noise gets fair bit louder. But when i put my foot right down on clutch the grinding noise completely disappears. The gears change smoothly and engage fine.
What does this sound like to you lot?

So clutch up, in neutral NOISE Clutch fully depressed NO NOISE Does this noise fade as you press the clutch pedal down, and then stop after a few seconds, if so I think your spot on with your thoughts about the thrust bearing, if not then its a shaft/bearing problem in the gearbox. However the thrust bearing would be my bet. ;D

Does it make the noise in all gears?

Yes does fade further down you press on clutch. does make noise in all gears, however the higher the gear the less you hear it due to increased engine/road noise. If it's thrust bearing is it less of a problem than a gear box problem, and cheaper?

id have thought that clutch release bearing would MAKE noise when the clutch was depressed. Sounds more gear-boxy- soz dude! s ps, yeah will be more pricey. What mileage? what box and engine codes?

i would agree thrust bearing is fooked , you wont have to drop the engine you can get the gear box out and the bearing without (done one before) i would also do the clutch if you have the £ so you dont have to do it again for a while andy

If your happy to do so, bring that car to the meet on Tuesday, and then we can all have a look, and see whats involved and what tools you'll need.

Thats an idea, but been told because mine is only a 4 speed 1.4 a 5 speed may not fit as the shaft or something may be a different size. is true?
