Hi all. What is the best grade oil for a standard 1600 Aircooled? And where's best to buy from? Cheers Oh before i forget. Apart from oil What else should i change when doing an oil change and what tools would i need. Changing the rocker cover gaskets as losing to much oil from them ;D

Try opie oils they do good deals. There is a cover under over the sump and dont lose the copper washers on the cover of the sump. If you have an oil bath air filter change the oil in that aswell and dont forget to change the oil filter. Run the engine for a while before changing the oil as this will make the oil thinner and hot so be carefull.

Use a good quality mineral oil, not semi- or fully synthetic as this is not not suitable. Plus DON'T use MORRIS oil, and please don't ask why as I'm not going through all that yet again ;D

He'll put up a link.....
I use Duckhams 15-40 mineral oil in mine, and in Hayleys with great success, she tried Castrol GTX but it overheated, no probs when she changed to Duckhams. £16 from Rock Bottom for a gallon.
LIke Stevie said, replace the gaskets, a gasket set from GSF (70p from memory-50p at shows) will include the 2 paper gaskets and the 6 or 8 little copper rings AND one larger ring for the sump plug(which you might not have) DO replace these as they deform on fitting and won't be oil-tight if you reuse them!

OH You'll need a 10mm socket for the sump plate. A flat head screwdriver for the rocker covers- unless yours are bolt-up... 17-19mm spanner or socket (cant remember) for the sump plug. more oil!

The reason is its a sh!tty recycled oil thats only used cos it has been used for donkeys years... it was acceptable in 1960 but not now!

Why is everyone of the opinion Morris oils are recycled oils, I can asure everyone that they are not. We use all Morris products at work and if they are good enough to run i a modern Turbo Diesel engine Their 10/40 mineral oil is good enough for old technology, but everyone to their own and any good quality 10/40 will be ok. Just at matter of interest my son and i have raced motocross bikes on Morris oils in the past at 18000 rpm flat out and never had a seizure so it can,t be that bad.

just heard somewhere.... i guess.....
like you say each to his own.. i guess the most important bit is getting an oil that suits the engine- so old school is best for a aircooled!

I am with John on this one, I have used Morris oil in all my VW's (except my T25 and that had to have a new engine) and have never had an oil related problem with any off them and busses do a lot of miles in a year. Best advice i can pass on is whatever oil you choose to use remember to change your oil every 4000 miles.
