i got a new battery for my car as my dad desided to leave the lights on over night when i was away . i fitted it yesterday and i notised that there was some oil on the floor under the engine bay. also the car splutters out what looks to be oil out the exhaust untill it the car warms up but then stops ,and its also alittle smokey. my brother thinks it might be the head gasket. is he right??? ( i hope not)

Id say your carb needs an overhaul mate. It would probably be related to when your car was cutting out a low rev's last time i saw it.

Oil smoke, is blue normally and has a very distinctive arid smell to it, if its white then its not smoke at all, but steam this could be for many reasons such as the car having sat for sometime in this cold weather, thus moisture has built up throughout the inside of the engine, or it could in fact be the head gasket, you don't always need to find emulsion in the oil for the head gasket to have blown, as it depends how bad the failure is, or where exactly the gasket has given out. A compression test would help to resolve this issue or help to high light any other underlying problems, such as valve wear. Also all Mk2's suffer from oil build up in the breather pipe system, which was a deliberate design feature of the Mk2, the reason was to help with extend valve life while running the car on un-leaded fuel, by allowing a small amount of oil vapor to pass over the valves, as added protection against valves recession. With my 16v for example, when the engine clears its throat and sucks out the oil/moisture build up in the crankcase breather you do get a puff of blue/white smoke out the exhaust pipe as a result, its for this very reason why, the breather pipe should be removed for the Hydrocarbon and Co2 level tests for the MOT, as its the only way of getting an accurate measurement. Also another well know issue is valve guide oil seal wear, these little rubber "o" rings have to with standard temperatures in the range of 200-300 degrees and over a period of time will fail, allowing a small amount of oil into the combustion chamber, these can be change quite easily however, this does mean removing the cylinder head, the camshaft and the valves to gain access to the oil seals, the seals come as part of your gasket set anyway, so its worth changing them if required.

im not sure as its not been run alot . ive asked the fokes on vwgolfmk2.co.uk and they all think its condensation in the oil .

yeah, this weather and short runs or just turning it on for a short period of time will cause condensation in the oil. i've had it in my beetle! to my surprise!

i had the car running for a good 45 mins today . when i first started her up there was some white sludge, which i wiped off then i checked it again 20 mins after and there was sludge there again but i could see water on it , this time when i put the cap ack on i left the sludge there and i checked it just b4 i turned her off and it was all gone . so it must have been condensation . but there was still a few drops of oil on thr drivrway ??

You could also double check the level in the header/overflow tank for the cooling system, to see how much, if any water your losing, if the gasket was leaking you be burning off water, as to oil leak ? where is the oil drip mark on your driveway in relation to the engine, it could be something as simple as the oil filter seals not tight, as the oil pressure at the filter is quite high.

tell her it could be worse, if you had a saxo, it'd leak bits of car on the drive where they rusted off! And if someone spat at you whilst driving the car would fold up and you'd be killed...
