nice idea! would work yeah, if you hide it well enough you could just buy a normal little switch from maplin. the feed to the coil is low current so you dont need to worry about having a beefy switch!

Liam its a very good idea to fit an extra isolator switch, in fact its such a good idea I've got one already to fit on mine ;D. however the anti-theft angle is not the main reason for me fitting one, as some models of Mk2 have a issue with the Bosch alternator, this was a design or production fault. Which means that unless the car is driven regularly, the cars electrics will discharge back through said alternator and completely flatten a fully charged and healthy battery in about two weeks, from memory I think this problem only applies to the 65 amp hour alternators and not the 55 amp models. Also eventually this discharging fault knackers the battery, as I've had 6-7 since owning the car, and the battery always fails on the same thing, one or more of the power cells completely collapses.

POO!!! Anyhow, wire and a switch will be good, although, if we find the right wire in the car you'd just need the switch. if you want someone to do it with, i'll give you a hand, so you can learn and do it at same time! take it easy.

Right, just a simple case of either single or two core (like speaker wire) will be perfect. Just need to sort a timeĀ¬!

However.... I've rarely, if ever, had any issues with mine! Wonder if it's the GTi's that suffer?

the diode breaks down in the regulator, and that lets the battery discharge through the alternator happens to a lot of old cars its an age thing the quickest way to find a fault like this is to measure the negative current from the battery and pull fuses until it drops to zero (if you dont have an alarm or radio with a memory) and also disconnect the possitive from the alternator but dont let it touch the chassis as normaly not fused. Also if doing this dont start the car before you have reconnected the alternator unless you want to fry the regulator cheers andy
