right, just bought a mk2 jetta 1600 but the alternator was already taken off when i bought it cuz it was broke, and now i dont have clue where to put the new one In the front under the bonnet only kidding m8 there should be a mounting bracket which is made of cast iron, this is bolted directly onto the engine block through the water pump. Which will look something like this. There are several types of tensioning adjusting arm, some are a two piece assembly some of the latter models have a ratchet type tensioning mechanism. The alternator bolts directly through two taped holes, one in each side of the cast bracket, these holes are at the top of the bracket as per the picture above. This is as viewed when looking into the engine compartment. If this is all as clear as mud let me know. Or if your coming to the Kettering meet I'll show you.

the only other thing is can you get too the meet before it gets to dark so I can have look.
The cast mounting bracket in the picture bolts onto the top of the water pump so have a look around that region of the engine to see if there is some type of other bracket.
