The following is a lecture by "The Golf Doctor" ;D on the volatility of hydrocarbons while in a state of combustion. ;D First have you got a Haynes Manuel for this certain vehicle? Why do ask, well unleaded fuel requires different valves, if the valves are hardened as in my motor then unleaded works fine, certain European countries start to reduce the lead content much earlier then in the U.K. so the valves maybe hardened anyway but if not and there soft valves then you have three options 1/ get leaded fuel at the current price of about £15.00 a gallon ( nearest garage around here is in Thrapston high st) 2/ add a lead supplementary additive to the normal 95 RON unleaded. (I have heard very mixed results about these products, so if you do buy it and then want to go down LRA route then I would go on recommendation from someone as to type of additive and brand of product) 3/ have the cylinder head re-built with hardened valves and seats (lots of money, so depends on what the vehicle is and whether your keeping it, plus is it worth it) You could run the vehicle on unleaded without any of the above but its going to kill the engine eventually if it has soft valves, as without the T.E.L in the petrol the cylinder head temperature increases greatly as higher levels of Benzene are added to the fuel to do the same job as the T.E.L. would, this intern then starts to burn out the exhaust valves, causing surface cracking, valve recession, etc ,etc. Please take this into account if your thinking of buying it has it been run like this anyway by the present or previous owners. If its limited mileage of short runs this is not too bad but if its done thousand upon thousands of miles at high speed for long periods then the damage is already done. P.S. Don't bother using Super Unleaded 99-105 RON that burns even hotter and in a car that age will make not difference at all except cost you more money when you fill up. Finally T.E.L. = tetra ethyl lead Other points. does the exhaust note at back box, it sound very blowy at idle when the engine is hot. test engine for wear including valves with a compression test. May have to reset the ignition timing due to the Octane change 4 **** is only about 68- 70 RON compare to 95 RON for unleaded.
